HVAC Emergency? Steps to Take Before We Arrive
When your AC or furnace fails suddenly, staying calm and taking smart steps helps. Here's what to do while waiting for service.
HVAC failures during extreme weather create genuine emergencies. Knowing what to do while waiting for help keeps your family comfortable and safe.
AC Stopped Working
**Check the Thermostat First** Verify settings. Try lowering temperature several degrees. Replace batteries if the display looks dim.
**Check the Breaker** Find the HVAC breaker and verify it hasn't tripped. Reset if needed. If it trips again immediately, leave it off and call for help.
**Look at the Filter** Extremely dirty filters can shut systems down. Replace if needed and see if the system restarts.
**Inspect Outside** Look for obvious problems: debris blocking the unit, ice on refrigerant lines, standing water.
Furnace Won't Run
**Verify Thermostat Settings** Make sure it's set to "heat" and temperature is above current room reading.
**Check the Gas Valve** The valve handle should align parallel with the gas pipe.
**Check the Breaker** Gas furnaces still need electricity for controls and blowers.
**Look for Error Codes** Many furnaces have LED indicators that flash error codes.
Staying Comfortable
**During AC Failures:** - Close blinds on sunny windows - Use fans for air movement - Drink plenty of water - Consider going somewhere cool if family members are vulnerable
**During Heating Failures:** - Close off rooms you don't need - Use space heaters carefully—never unattended - Layer clothing and use blankets - Never use outdoor equipment indoors
