AC Problems We See Most During Valley Summers
Extreme valley heat exposes every weakness in air conditioning systems. Here are the issues that keep our phones ringing.
When valley temperatures climb past 110°F, air conditioners work overtime. Systems that seemed fine in spring suddenly struggle. Here's what we see most often.
Refrigerant Running Low
Low refrigerant means your system can't transfer heat properly. You'll notice warm air from vents and ice forming on lines. Refrigerant doesn't get used up—low levels mean a leak exists.
Frozen Coils
Sounds strange during heat waves, but evaporator coils freeze when airflow restricts or refrigerant runs low. The system runs but cooling stops. Shut it down and let ice melt before calling for service.
Dead Capacitors
Capacitors help motors start and run. Valley heat accelerates their failure. A bad capacitor might cause the system not to start, or to shut down unexpectedly after running.
Dirty Condenser Coils
Your outdoor unit releases heat into the air. Coated with dirt and dust, heat transfer drops dramatically. The system works harder and cooling suffers.
Thermostat Confusion
Sometimes everything except the thermostat works fine. Check settings and batteries before assuming major problems. Bad thermostats create symptoms mimicking serious failures.
Clogged Condensate Drains
Air conditioning removes humidity, creating water that drains away. Blocked drains cause backups, water damage, and system shutdown from safety switches.
Compressor Failure
Compressor problems are expensive. When compressors fail in older systems, replacement of the entire outdoor unit often makes more economic sense than repair.
Prevention Beats Repair
Most summer breakdowns connect to deferred maintenance. Annual tune-ups identify problems before they strand you in the heat. Schedule service before summer arrives.
